It is a good rule, after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between… C.S. Lewis
This blog is an attempt to live up to this advice. I do not read enough old books, and the list of classics I should read only seems to grow! Here I will review, promote and share my reactions to the literary foundation so many of us share.
I blog mainly over at Hmm…, but I originally I created this blog as a place to post my more spiritual/Christian-themed posts. My faith is the most important thing in my life, and spills over into every area of my life, but I don’t feel the urge to insert a sermon into every book review I do. And Hmm… clearly focuses on bookish thoughts, fiction, and writing in general. This will be the blog has other posts relating to how faith can interact with every facet of everyday life, as well as newer material on the classics I’m reading.
You may also be wondering who I am. Why should you trust a random blog on the internet? Well, the short answer is that I am Harma-Mae Smit—just an average member of the Canadian Reformed churches, and my blog is in no way authoritative or representative of anything except my own thoughts. That said, I love and have studied both theology and history. And so I write and share what I’m passionate about.
If you are interested in my fiction, explore my ebook store–I won’t mention it often on this blog.

‘Somente a Deus’ is Portuguese, and roughly translates as ‘to God alone.’ This, of course, refers to the first part of the famous slogan of the Reformation: Soli Deo Gloria. And I translated it into Portuguese because… well, I like Portuguese. I like Brazil.
Happy reading!
